Bonanza King & Notorious Shank Bros

Bonanza King will bring its original country swing tunes to the N Street Common House on Saturday May 4 at 8 p.m.  The group is fronted by singer/songwriter Kari King, who will perform with her band of local all-stars.  Opening the show will be veteran bluegrass group The Notorious Shank Brothers.  The N Street Common House, located at 716 N Street in Davis,  will feature dance -riendly atmosphere as well as comfortable seating, $10 suggested donation.

Kari King sings of her personal experiences, yet the songs have a classic feel.  She blends an eclectic country sound with the familiarity of early ‘40s swing in addition to influences of ragtime, blues, old time pop form, and Western folk music.  Essences of jazz are evident in the interactive playing of so called “frankensteel” by Keith Cary, and the popping telecaster sound of J. Cedar.  Tasteful fiddle work by Roger Kunkle is supported Steve O’Neill on standup bass.  O’Neill brings some sweet harmony on vocals and the talented Nick Carvajal drives a steady beat on the suitcase drum kit.  What makes this group special is the way they interact musically, and the craftsmanship of the songs has a way of being classic, but also fresh.  Dynamic playing makes it entertaining to sit and watch, while the groove is compelling for dance lovers.  The band is quickly gaining notoriety locally, having performed at the Palms and Oddfellows Hall in the last month.

The Notorious Shank Brothers have been a Bluegrass fixture around Yolo County since 2006, playing at the Yolo County Fair each year, Rominger West Winery, Sudwerk Dock Store, Picnic-in-the-Park and the Woodland Opera House, as well as at N St. in December 2010. In addition to traditional Bluegrass, NSB features country songs done Bluegrass style and a smattering of more modern Bluegrass. Since July 2010, the band has consisted of Erik Shank on banjo, Al Shank on mandolin, Ken Eldridge on guitar and Kim-Xuan Nguyen on bass, with everyone pitching in on vocals around the traditional one microphone.
