Beethoven and his little-known rival

Yes, Beethoven had many rival pianists and composers in his day at the beginning of the 19th century. One was Carl Maria von Weber, a relative by marriage to Mozart. He wrote many wonderful pieces for the piano, as well as the glorious piano concerto played at the top of the second hour. Jeremiah Clarke, a 17th century composer, is perhaps best known for his trumpet voluntary often heard at weddings. In addition to this piece by Clarke, you will hear the quiet, contemplative third movement from Beethoven's Symphony #9, as well as a sonata by Beethoven for cello and piano, as played by Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax. Some short pieces by Chopin, Mendelsohn, Granados, and two arias by Puccini, round out today's program. Check out the playlist at http://kdrt.org/node/10987
